VBHexTerm
(Last updated Tuesday February 20, 2007 at 12:38 PM)

VBHexTerm is a terminal program designed to help test and debug RS-232 serial interfaces. Similar to the VBTerm example included with Visual Basic 6, but with hexadecimal capability and binary file transfer. VBHexTerm allows the user to toggle between ASCII (alphanumeric) and hex modes. In hex mode you can receive and transmit all hex characters (bytes). Hex bytes are directly transmitted by entering the two digits followed by a carriage return, i.e. 7F<CR> transmits &H7F (hex 7F). Hex characters are displayed in byte-wide columns. In addition, VBHexTerm exposes all properties of the MSComm control. Status LEDs provide visual display of all DTE and DCE control signals and transmitted and received data. The user can toggle the state of both RTS and DTR control signals and force a break signal state by simply clicking on the corresponding LED.  Error handling has been enhanced to avoid program lockup caused by multiple cascading errors, such as repeated framing errors when testing noisy or intermittent links. VBHexTerm was developed to meet specific requirements to test and debug data logging and test equipment using RS-232 interfaces. Online Help with useful RS-232 reference material includes signal descriptions, waveforms, cable details, and ASCII table. VBHexTerm is available for download as freeware. Windows 98, ME, and XP compatible. VBHexTerm Copyright © 2001 by Chris Schroeder of Beyond Designs.
